My Vote – Should Bollywood Actors Be Exploiting Hip-Hop To Promote Their Movies?

,

Hip-Hop music is one of the most loved genres in the world. Similarly, it has also left its impact on the Indian masses. Most of the people think that Bohemia or Honey Singh were the reason behind the success of hip-hop music in Bollywood. But do you guys know that it all started way back in the nineties when Baba Sehgal released his tracks – “Thanda Thanda Paani”, “Main Bhi Madonna” and others? On the other hand, in the year 2002, “Vich Pardesan De” came out and this birthed the huge success of hip-hop music in the South Asian countries.

In fact, Bollywood was aware of the fact that this genre of music is going to be big one day. As a result, Bollywood started using hip-hop tracks in their movies as promotional songs. Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar introduced Bohemia in his movies like Chandi Chowk To China and 8×10 Tasveer. On the other hand, female rapper Hard Kaur made famous tracks like “Move Your Body” and “Talli” which incorporated rap music in Bollywood.

In the year 2011, there was an immense increase in the interest of Bollywood music industry towards rap music. This was due to the success of Yo! Yo! Honey Singh. Moreover, with his hit mixtape International Villager, he became every Bollywood producer’s favourite. With the success of Honey Singh, a new trend was formed in Bollywood with many producers roping in rap artists for their songs.

Due to the exposure through Bollywood, rap music became a household term. In fact, the face of Desi Hip Hop has changed and there is no constant trend when it comes to Desi rap. From having 4 cheesy bars in a song to having full fledged rap verses in movies is quite common now. It has been a slow and steady movement and a fulfilling one too.

5 Times When Bollywood Actors Tried Their Hands On Rapping But Failed Miserably Siddhart

As a matter of fact, many Bollywood celebrities also tried their hand on the art of rapping. They knew that this genre of music has a bright future and the youth of our country is accepting it with a warm heart. Also, they knew that doing so will get their movies some extra exposure. Firstly, they tried their hands on singing but now lot of actors and actresses are rapping for their own movie. If you ask us, these celebrities are taking unfair advantage of hip-hop culture by doing shitty rap tracks for the sake of movie promotion. We, as a hip-hop listeners, have low tolerance towards the misrepresentation of a culture that took so long to develop its roots in the country.

On the whole, in this piece, we would like show our readers how Bollywood stars tried their hands on rapping but failed miserably. But before that, you can vote and let us know your views on this matter. What do you think? Should Bollywood actors continue exploiting hip-hop to promote their movies?

Are Bollywood Actors Exploiting Hip Hop To Promote Their Movies?

5 Times Bollywood Actors Tried Their Hands On Rapping But Failed Miserably

1. Sonakshi Sinha

The Dabangg girl did a track called “Aaj Mood Ishqholic Hai” which was released in December 2015. The track was composed by the duo Meet Bros and the lyrics of this track was penned by the veteran lyricist Kumaar. As a matter of fact, for this track, Sonakshi Sinha donned a bohemian-chic look with beads and tassels while performing. The track was released via T-series and it was her debut single as a rapper. She tried hard but certainly failed to leave a good impression.

Significant lyrics from the track

“Yaad rakh meri desi feel hai,

Tere sang mere dil ki deal hai,

Na tu itna akad, na mere sir pe chad,

Jo tuje dedi deal hai”

2.Varun Dhawan

Bollywood heartthrob Varun Dhawan did his first rap for a track called “Lucky Tu Lucky Me” from the movie called “Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania” which released in the year 2014.  Varun Dhawan lent his vocals to the track along with Benny Dayal and Anushka Manchanda. Sachin-Jigar did the music and Shashank Khaitan penned the lyrics for the track. Apart from this, he later rapped a number called  “Happy B’day” for the dance-based film “ABCD 2”. Varun has been one of the actors who shares the enthusiasm of listening to hip-hop music. Maybe he should do just that!

Significant lyrics from the track

“Commitment k naam pe tu roz kare vaar,

Tere aage piche ghumun banke driver in my car,

College ka hero tha main, tha main superstar,

Baby, mujpar bhari pad gaya tera pyaar, pyaar.”

3. Siddharth Malhotra

Sidharth Malhotra is the latest one to try his hands on rapping. He did a rap for a track called “Bandook Meri Laila” for his recent release “A Gentleman – Sundar, Susheel, Risky” starring Jacqueline Fernandez. Sachin Jigar did the music for the track and Vayu has penned the lyrics for the same. The track has Raftaar as a featured artist along with Ash King and Jigar Saraiya. While he did do a better job compared to some other actors, rapping is not meant for Sid. He should concentrate more on his movies instead of venturing into uncharted areas.

Significant lyrics from the track

“Kudi lagey tu bareta ki beti,

Tainu vekhya tan kich gayi peti,

Tere lie khaa lun seene pe goli,

Phir bhi kyun tu mujko goli deti.”

4. Randeep Hooda

The Haryanvi jaat did a track called “Kharch Karod” along with the Haryanvi superstar Fazilpuria. This track was a promotional track for his movie “Lal Rang”. It’s a remix version of Vipin Patwa’s composition, which was sung by the popular folk singer of Haryana, Vikas Kumar. Everything about this music video is stereotypical to say the least. Models, fancy cars, party and booze, catchy tune with a lazy rap verse – all in all just commercial pop rap.

Significant lyrics from the track

“Man kasam Quran ke Geeta ki,
Saugandh Ram ki khaunga,
Randeep Hooda hai naam mera,
Thane izzat badi dilaunga.”

5. Anushka Sharma

Naughty Billo was the track that Anushka Sharma did a rap part on. It was the promotional track from her movie “Phillauri”. The movie also stars Diljit Dosanjh, Suraj Sharma and Mehreen Pirzada in the lead roles. Shashwat Sachdev composed the whole track and Anvita Dutt penned the lyrics for the same. Much like Sonakshi, Anushka also failed to charm us with what seems to be a ‘rap’.

Significant lyrics from the track

“Main hi ban jaungi pehchan teri,
Zara kadar tu kar nadaan meri,
Tu hai sher toh main sava sher,
Ye samjha doon,Na rehna tu dhokhe mein yun,
Ja dur phitte munh.”
