Hip-Hop has always been a medium for the unheard voices in society. The scene evolved from online battles to offline jams and street cyphers. Exeel Entertainment & Zoya Akhtar’s latest movie “Gully Boy” centers around a time period in the scene where it evolved from the Mumbai streets. The Ranveer Singh starrer features a squadron of rappers (both old and new) playing different roles in the movie. The soundtrack of this movie has officially been released, and has gained mixed reviews from both the community and the public in general. There are a few songs that stand out to cover the zone of authentic, Indian hip-hop – but the tracklist is a mix of Bollywood flavor and Indian Hip-Hop tunes as well.
Gully Flow
Recently, there was a music launch party held in true hip-hop fashion with an event thrown at Richardson & Cruddas – Mumbai! Ranveer Singh hosted the event with the grit of an emcee. Slinging local gully slang everywhere, the actor held up the energy in the building along with the emcees present on stage. The tracklist of the Gully Boy album contains songs from emcees Divine, Kaam Bhaari, MC Altaf, Swadesi Crew, Noxious D (Achint Marwah) among other songwriters and singers.
The event saw many verses and beats by more emcees and DJ’s such as Spitfire, Dee MC, MC Altaf, D’evil, Kaam Bhaari, Dub Sharma, Major C (of Bombay Bassment) and many more! It was as festive as it was historic. With Bollywoods connection to the sounds of the street, the movie aims to generate a gathered interest in the genre in India. Here are a few glimpses of the event
