For those of you who are spiritually inclined, as all true Hip-Hop heads may be, let’s take a step back.  Kalyug or Kali Yuga is the fourth and the last Yug (cycle of time) as described in Hinduism. The first was “Satya Yuga (Age or Era) of Truth,” when mankind was centered around God and every manifestation or work was close to the purest ideal, where mankind allowed intrinsic goodness to rule supreme, also referred to as the “Golden Age”.

The second and third are the Treta and Dvapara Yug’s where materialism, greed & vices pulled mankind further away from their purest form (God).  The current era which we are living in is the “Kali Yuga” (Era of Darkness), where mankind altogether questions the existence of God, forgets his roots and is blinded by materialism.

The Hip-Hop movement was born and has always been centered around the upliftment of the common man through knowledge & social consciousness.  In a time where the portrayal of Hip-Hop by the mainstream is definitely moving towards the “Era of Darkness” (Kali Yuga), Desi Hip-Hop artists like Mandeep Sethi aka Seti X, Humble The Poet, MC Heam & many others are stickin’ to their roots and occupying Hip-Hop.
